In this class I'll guide you, step by step, through painting beautiful figures in cold wax medium and oils. From simple proportions and warm-up exercises to a finished figure painting on panel.

You don't need to be able to draw a perfect figure, I teach simple proportions and drawing exercises that actually work, then we paint expressive figures that grow from rich textured backgrounds.

Marina Teding van Berkhout

Cold wax artist & instructor

I'm Marina, a Dutch professional artist living in the south of France. I'm passionate about painting representational art in cold wax and oils, capturing a feeling, a gesture, a presence without too many details.

In this class I share everything I've learned about adding figures to textured, abstract backgrounds, from simple proportions to the final brushstrokes, so you can bring your own expressive figure paintings to life.

Questions?

Frequently asked

Do I need to know how to draw figures?+

No. I'll teach you simple proportions and easy exercises to get you comfortable drawing figures. You can even trace if you prefer, there's nothing wrong with that.

What level is this class for?+

Anyone who wants to paint figurative work in oils and cold wax. Whether you're new to cold wax or already have abstract experience and want to add figures, this class is for you.

What supplies do I need?+

Oil paints, cold wax medium, Arches oil paper, a wooden panel, basic tools like a palette knife and bowl scraper, and soft pastels. To start you only really need cold wax medium, oil paper, and an old credit card to apply the paint.

Can I use acrylics instead of oils?+

This class is designed for oils with cold wax. If you'd rather work in acrylics, check out my Figure in Acrylics mini class.

How is this different from painting a traditional portrait?+

We're not trying to paint a photorealistic portrait. Instead, we create expressive, textured paintings of figures that capture personality and spirit using cold wax and palette-knife techniques.

How long do I have access?+

Forever. You get lifetime access to all lessons and videos, come back whenever you want.

What is your refund policy?+

Unfortunately, once you're enrolled I'm unable to offer a refund. Have a look through this page and reach out by email if you have questions before joining.
