A place to begin
You don’t have to know what it will become.
Sometimes the nicest part of a painting is a little patch of colour you hadn’t planned. A mark from a scraper, a layer peeking through, or two colours meeting in an unexpected way.
We’ll spend time trying those things before worrying about a finished painting. I’ll show you what I’m doing and why, and you can pause the video to have a go yourself.
If you love the layered look of my cold wax paintings but prefer working with acrylics, this is a lovely place to start.

A little note about materials
This class was originally filmed with Powerwax and acrylics, so you’ll still see that name in the lessons. The landscape and flower supply guidance also lists heavy gel medium as an alternative. You can explore layered texture with either, but heavy gel won’t scrape back in the same way, and the feel and finish can differ. Have a little play with yours before starting a larger painting.

I’m a Dutch artist living in the South of France. I love painting with layers, whether I’m working with cold wax and oils or acrylics. The colours showing through and the unexpected marks are what keep me coming back.
In this class, I’ll share the materials and techniques I use, and show you how I bring them into a painting. You can follow along without feeling that yours has to turn out the same.

Before we get the paints out.
I’m new to textured painting. Can I start here?
Yes. We begin with the materials, tools and techniques before moving into the painting projects. You can pause a demonstration, try it for yourself and watch it again. There is no timetable to keep up with.
Do I need to be able to draw?
You don’t need detailed drawing skills for these projects. We start with small abstracts, then explore a landscape and flowers through colour, shapes and layers. I’ll show you how I develop the paintings as we go.
Is this the class that used to be called Powerwax & Acrylics?
Yes, it is the same class, not a new set of recordings. You’ll see and hear Powerwax in the original demonstrations. The landscape and flower supply guidance also lists heavy gel medium as an alternative. Heavy gel won’t scrape back in the same way as Powerwax, and the feel, drying and finish can differ. Try a little first rather than expecting exactly the same result.
What materials will I need?
Acrylic paints, a suitable acrylic texture medium or heavy gel medium, painting surfaces and a few tools for spreading paint and making marks. The class includes supply guidance. You don’t need every tool you see on my table to begin. Check the guidance before shopping, and follow the instructions for the products you choose.
Can I use cold wax and oil paints instead?
This class is taught with acrylic materials. Many of the ideas about building layers and making marks also appear in my oil and cold wax work, but the mediums behave differently. If you’d like to paint in oils, Cold Wax & Oils: The Basics is the corresponding class for those materials.
Do I have to finish it all in one go?
Not at all. This is a full class to explore over time. Watch a little, try a technique, then come back to it. Some layers need time to dry, and that will depend on your medium and how thickly you apply it.
How long do I have access?
Buying the class separately gives you lifetime access for one payment, with no subscription or deadline to finish. If you take the class through Texture Lab Gold or Inner Circle, access lasts while your paid membership is active.
Can I follow the class in French or Dutch?
