Marina Teding van Berkhout

Cold wax artist & instructor

I'm Marina, a Dutch professional artist living in the south of France. I love textured acrylic painting because it gives me everything I adore about cold wax, the layers, the textures, the happy accidents, but with the speed and ease of water-based materials.

Whether you're completely new to textured acrylic painting or an experienced painter looking for fresh techniques, I've designed this class to give you a solid foundation. I'll show you everything I know, step by step, layer by layer.

Questions?

Frequently asked

What is texture medium and how does it work with acrylics?+

Texture medium (also called heavy gel medium) is a thick, paste-like additive you mix with acrylic paints to create lush textured layers and beautiful matte surfaces. It dries fast, cleans up with water, and gives you the layered, scraped, mark-making look of traditional cold wax, but with acrylics.

Is this class suitable for beginners?+

Absolutely. The class is designed as a complete introduction to textured acrylic painting. I start from the very beginning, which tools to use, how to prepare your surface, how to mix the medium with acrylics, and every technique you'll need.

Can I use oils instead of acrylics?+

This class is designed specifically for acrylics with texture medium. If you'd rather work in oils with cold wax, check out my Cold Wax & Oils — The Basics class.

What tools and supplies do I need?+

Acrylic paints, a heavy gel or texture medium, palette knives, a bowl scraper, a brayer, stencils, and rigid panels or cradled boards. I give a complete supply list with brand recommendations in Module 2, Tools of the Trade.

How fast does the medium dry compared to oil-based cold wax?+

Much faster. Because the medium is water-based, it dries significantly quicker than oil-based cold wax. Depending on layer thickness, you can usually continue working within hours rather than days.

Is textured acrylic painting only for abstract artists?+

Not at all. The technique is fantastic for abstracts but equally beautiful for figurative work, landscapes, florals, and portraits.

How long do I have access to the class?+

Forever. Once you enrol, the lessons are yours for life. Many students rewatch the technique demonstrations every time they start a new painting.
