Mixing Greens
We start by exploring and mixing a beautiful range of greens with your blue and yellow oil paints, creating colour swatches for reference.
From statue to portrait, texture, greens, and a touch of magic.
In this mini class I'll guide you step by step through painting an expressive portrait based on a statue, using cold wax medium and oils.
We'll mix our own greens, build a monochrome underpainting, and then add colour and collage so the portrait emerges from the textured layers beneath.
Start anytime, work at your own pace, and enjoy lifetime access. This is a self-guided class, but you can always reach out by email with questions.
Three simple stages, with everything explained as we go.

We start by exploring and mixing a beautiful range of greens with your blue and yellow oil paints, creating colour swatches for reference.

We build a monochrome underpainting of the statue, establishing the form, values, and composition with textured layers before adding colour.

The magical part: we bring the statue to life with colour and collage, and accept the fact that she looks more like a tree nymph than a statue!
Oils, cold wax medium and soft pastels, simple supplies.
No need to draw perfectly, the statue emerges from the layers.
I walk you through every single stage.

Cold wax artist & instructor
I'm Marina, a Dutch professional artist living in the south of France. I'm passionate about painting in cold wax and oils, and recently in acrylics and texture mediums too. Cold wax and oils give me the freedom to build beautiful texture and create those layered backgrounds I love.
“I fell in love with cold wax in my oil painting because of Marina's class. The videos made me feel as if I was right there in her studio.”
“I absolutely loved all the techniques. Thank you so much for sharing.”
“These classes shed a whole new attitude to oils for me, making them so much less intimidating.”
No. I'll guide you through every step. You don't need to draw perfectly, the technique lets the statue emerge from the abstract background.
Cold wax medium (such as Gamblin) mixed with oil paints creates textured, layered effects with a matte, waxy surface. You'll find everything you need on my art supplies page.
Oil paints, cold wax medium, brushes, a palette knife, soft pastels, and a canvas or panel. A full supply list is provided inside the class.
This class uses oils specifically, traditional cold wax isn't compatible with acrylics. I teach similar subjects using texture medium for acrylics in my Textured Acrylics classes.
