Ever wondered how a statue becomes an expressive, textured portrait?
In this mini class I'll guide you step by step through painting an expressive portrait based on a statue, using cold wax medium and oils.
We'll mix our own greens, build a monochrome underpainting, and then add colour and collage so the portrait emerges from the textured layers beneath.

We build a monochrome underpainting of the statue, establishing the form, values, and composition with textured layers before adding colour.
Adding Colour & Collage
The magical part: we bring the statue to life with colour and collage, and accept the fact that she looks more like a tree nymph than a statue!
Cold wax & oils
Oils, cold wax medium and soft pastels, simple supplies.

Do I need experience painting portraits or statues?+
No. I'll guide you through every step. You don't need to draw perfectly, the technique lets the statue emerge from the abstract background.
What is cold wax medium and where can I buy it?+
Cold wax medium (such as Gamblin) mixed with oil paints creates textured, layered effects with a matte, waxy surface. You'll find everything you need on my art supplies page.
What supplies do I need?+
Oil paints, cold wax medium, brushes, a palette knife, soft pastels, and a canvas or panel. A full supply list is provided inside the class.
Can I use acrylics instead of oils?+
This class uses oils specifically, traditional cold wax isn't compatible with acrylics. I teach similar subjects using texture medium for acrylics in my Textured Acrylics classes.
How long do I have access?+
