Amber
This portrait, Amber, was painted using acrylics and a unique water-based cold wax that allowed me to create rich textures and transparent layers. What makes Amber truly special is the addition of rust powder, mixed with the acrylics to give the painting an earthy, organic feel. The rust creates subtle, warm tones that seem to shift with the light, adding both texture and depth to the portrait.
The process began with an abstract base layer, slowly built up with soft blue colors and textured layers. As I worked, Amber started to emerge from the layers beneath, as if revealing her story. The cold wax softened the edges of the paint, giving the portrait a velvety, matte finish that contrasts beautifully with the roughness of the rust.
Amber is captured in a reflective, almost quiet moment, with layers of emotions hinted at beneath the surface. The translucent quality of the wax allows glimpses of these layers to peek through, adding a sense of history and time, as if each brushstroke carries a part of her story. The combination of cold wax and rust powder creates a tactile quality that invites you to look closer, to explore the textures and uncover the depth of the painting.
The fast-drying nature of acrylics combined with the texture-building properties of cold wax allowed me to experiment freely, giving Amber a spontaneous yet intentional feel. Each layer, from the soft layers to the gritty rust, contributes to her dynamic presence.
I hope you can feel the energy and emotion that went into creating Amber, and that you are drawn into the quiet yet powerful story told through her textured layers.
